The Belle Isle Awning Company was established in 1931 by William Belluomo. He would be proud of the fact that it is now owned and operated by the third generation of his family.

During the early 20th century Belle Isle was home to a large number of sailing vessels where Mr. Belluomo developed his skills as a sail maker. As the Great Depression impinged upon the Detroit area, Mr. and Mrs. Belluomo decided to make sails out of their home. When people started to see how good his product was they began to ask if he would also make tents and awnings for their homes and businesses. Before long, demand for awnings and tents outnumbered the demand for sails, hence the start of a company.

Mr. Belluomo purchased his first building on Jefferson Avenue at the corner of Townsend but he needed a name. With a view of the Belle Isle Bridge across the from the Water Works Park a decision was made to call the company Belle Isle Tent and Awning.

After Mr. Belluomo passed the company over to his son, William A. Belluomo, many changes were taking place in Detroit. With Colman Young as mayor, the city of Detroit purchased two city blocks on Jefferson which included The Belle Isle Awning Co Building. This coincided with the steady growth of the residential building in the
suburbs which led William A. Belluomo to move the company to Harper Avenue, south of Nine Mile in St. Clair Shores.

When Mr. Belluomo’s grandson, William J. Belluomo, entered the business he recognized a need in the traditional awning market with the introduction of backlit awnings. The growth of the commercial business was tremendous and once again the business needed to
move. This time a building was purchased in Roseville near 13 mile and I-94 to accommodate the ever-growing suburban communities, both commercial and residential, as well as continuing to service the established East side community that has come to expect our commitment to quality craftsmanship.

The company is still located in Roseville today and continues to operate under the ownership of William J. Belluomo as he continues three generations of his family legacy.
